หอศิลป์ร่วมสมัยราชดำเนินภูมิใจเสนอ A Life in Shadows นิทรรศการภาพถ่ายสารคดีโดย Constantine Korsovitis ระหว่างวันที่ 3-26 สิงหาคม 2561 ซึ่งเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของเทศกาล PhotoBangkok 2018
นิทรรศการ A Life in Shadows นำเสนอภาพถ่ายสารคดีที่บันทึกวัฒนธรรมการเล่าเรื่องที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดในโลกชนิดหนึ่งจำนวนกว่า 30 รูป ความละเอียดอ่อน ความลุ่มลึก และคุณค่าของการเชิดหนังและศิลปินแขนงนี้ในภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งในประเทศไทย มาเลเซีย อินโดนีเซีย และกัมพูชา คือสิ่งที่นิทรรศการนี้มุ่งสำรวจ แม้ว่าประเทศที่กล่าวถึงเหล่านี้จะมีเอกลักษณ์ทางวัฒนธรรมของตนเอง แต่คุณลักษณะทางวัฒนธรรม ศาสนา ภาษา และชนชาติหลายประการมีความคล้ายคลึงกัน การเชิดหนังเป็นศิลปะที่คนในภูมิภาคนี้มีร่วมกัน และสายใยที่เชื่อมการเชิดหนังของแต่ละประเทศเข้าด้วยกันก็คือการใช้มหากาพย์ฮินดูเรื่องรามายณะและมหาภารตะในการแสดง
ในปี 2557 Constantine Korsovitis เริ่มศึกษาศิลปะการเชิดหนังโดยถ่ายภาพและสัมภาษณ์นายหนัง นักดนตรี และช่างฝีมือที่ทำหนัง แนวคิดเบื้องหลังการทำงานคือการหาว่าบุคคลที่อยู่ภายใต้ความเป็นศิลปินและการแสดงนั้นคือใคร Constantine สนใจแรงกดดันที่ศิลปะแนวประเพณีต้องเผชิญในโลกปัจจุบัน และในขณะเดียวกันก็เฉลิมฉลองจิตวิญญาณความเป็นมนุษย์และเชิดชูศิลปินที่สร้างสรรค์ศิลปะที่งดงามนี้ขึ้นมา ซึ่งหลายรายได้อำลาโลกนี้ไปแล้วนับแต่โครงการนี้เริ่มต้นขึ้น
“ศิลปินแขนงนี้เต็มไปด้วยความมหัศจรรย์ ความลุ่มลึก และความเป็นประวัติศาสตร์ที่เด่นชัด” Constantine กล่าวถึงการเชิดหนังในอุษาคเนย์ “ผมต้องการให้งานสะท้อนให้เห็นความสำคัญของนักเล่าเรื่องเหล่านี้ และทักษะและความทุ่มเทที่นายหนังต้องมี ศิลปินเหล่านี้ต้องต่อสู้ดิ้นรนอยู่ทุกวันเพื่อให้เสียงของตนเป็นที่รับรู้ และให้สาธารณชนได้ฟังและเห็นเรื่องราวอันทรงคุณค่า ผมตระหนักถึงความรับผิดชอบในฐานะช่างภาพและมนุษย์คนหนึ่งที่จะบอกเล่าเรื่องราวของพวกเขา แม้ว่าการเชิดหนังจะไม่ใช่วัฒนธรรมของผมเองก็ตาม”
A Life in Shadows เผยให้เห็นภาพบางเสี้ยวของชีวิตศิลปินนอกบริบทการแสดงและการทำงาน เป้าหมายของโครงการเป็นมากกว่าการบันทึกภาพเชิงสารคดี โดยพยายามที่จะยกระดับการตระหนักรู้และความชื่นชมที่มีต่อศิลปวัฒนธรรมดั้งเดิมแขนงต่างๆ ทั้งในภูมิภาคนี้และทั่วโลก โครงการนี้มีแผนที่จะตีพิมพ์หนังสือและจัดทำแหล่งข้อมูลเปิดเกี่ยวกับการบันทึกและงานวิจัยการเชิดหนัง หลังจากจบนิทรรศการที่กรุงเทพ นิทรรศการนี้จะไปจัดแสดงต่อที่สิงคโปร์ ซิดนีย์ กัวลาลัมเปอร์ และจาการ์ตา

Constantine Korsovitis
Constantine Korsovitis เป็นช่างภาพชาวออสเตรเลียที่พำนักอยู่ที่ซิดนีย์ เขาจบปริญญาโททางด้านภาพถ่ายสารคดีจาก University of Sydney และได้รับประกาศนียบัตรด้านการถ่ายภาพจาก Sydney Institute of Technology เขาเริ่มแสดงงานในแกลเลอรี่และสถาบันต่างๆ ทั่วโลกตั้งแต่ปี 2541
ในช่วงหลายปีที่ผ่านมา Constantine ได้พัฒนางานชุดใหญ่เกี่ยวกับการเชิดหนังในภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ในปี 2559 ผลงานบางส่วนในชุดนี้ได้จัดแสดงร่วมกับคอลเล็กชั่นหนังจากเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ของ British Museum ในนิทรรศการ Shadow Puppet Theatre from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand นิทรรศการ A Life in Shadows เป็นนิทรรศการครั้งที่สองของ Constantine ในประเทศไทย

AUSTRALIAN PHOTOGRAPHER CELEBRATES SHADOW PUPPETRY TRADITIONS OF SOUTHEAST ASIA WITH DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION AS PART OF PHOTOBANGKOK 2018

The Ratchadamnoen Contemporary Art Center (RCAC) is proud to present A Life in Shadows, a documentary photography exhibition by Constantine Korsovitis, from 3 to 26 August 2018 as part of the PhotoBangkok 2018 festival.Featuring more than 30 images documenting one of the oldest traditions of storytelling in the world, A Life in Shadows explores the nuance, sophistication and value of shadow theatre traditions in Southeast Asia—in particular Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Cambodia—and the people who perform them. While each of these nations has its own distinct culture, they share common cultural, religious, linguistic and racial characteristics. Shadow Theatre is the singular voice of the region and its common thread is the use of the Hindu epics of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata as the source of stories.In 2014, Constantine Korsovitis began his research on shadow theatre by photographing and interviewing with puppet masters, musicians and craftsmen in their homes. The idea was to find out who the man or woman was behind the artist, behind the mask of performance. The photographer is concerned with the pressure under which traditional art forms find themselves today as well as celebrating the human spirit, honouring all the artists who build this wonderful art form, several of whom have since passed away.“There is magic in the art form, sophistication and a keen sense of history,” Korsovitis spoke of Southeast Asian shadow theatre. “I want the work to shed some light on how important these storytellers are and the level of skill and dedication that is required to become a master puppeteer. They face great struggles on a daily basis just to get their voices heard. Stories that have the right to be told and to be seen. I feel my own responsibility as a photographer and human being to tell this story despite the fact they are not my own.”A Life in Shadows provides a glimpse of the artist’s life, beyond the confinement of the traditional performance and studio. The aim of the project is to extend beyond documentation and to elevate awareness and appreciation of traditional arts in the region and around the world. The project is also planned to culminate in a publication and a public archive of shadow theatre documentation and research. After Bangkok, the exhibition will travel to Singapore, Sydney, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta.The exhibition is made possible with the support from the Thai Ministry of Culture, Sema Thai and Karma Images.Gallery hours: Tuesday-Sunday, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. Closed on Monday.Constantine KorsovitisConstantine Korsovitis is an Australian photographer based in Sydney. He has a Masters Degree in Documentary Photography from Sydney University and a Diploma of Photography from the Sydney Institute of Technology. Since 1998, his work has been exhibited at various galleries and institutions around the world.Over the years, Korsovitis has developed an extensive body of work on Southeast Asian shadow theatre. In 2016, part of his photography was featured alongside a collection of Southeast Asian shadow theatre puppets at an exhibition titled Shadow Puppet Theatre from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand at the British Museum. A Life in Shadows is his second exhibition in Thailand.PhotoBangkok 2018PhotoBangkok 2018 is the second edition of PhotoBangkok, a triennial, not-for-profit international photography festival created by the renowned Thai photographer Piyatat Hemmatat.
